I tried it once briefly, but I need to try it again. You're such a productive creator of new features that it's challenging to keep up!

Hi Ivo,
This is M31 with 3 hours of data that I just took on 30 Oct on a near full Moon night. It is clear that I still need more data. Be that as it may, there's artifacts and noise, but I wanted to try out the new superstructure module on it. I too see these weird streaks in both the airy and isolate module but not the dimsmall module. I'm running on a MacBook Pro 16. Is this what is expected or there are artifacts that I should mask out? I used version 1.7.438 alpha.
Dimsmall looks ok. Airy module: Isolate module: cytan

Re: 1.7.430 alpha with new Super Structure module (Life replacement)
I have an issue with the new super structure module: it does not stop calculating. Even after 25+ min it does not finish its job. I tested it on the DimSmall and the Isolate preset. I've used several of the alpha versions, right now the most recent one (1.7.438), which is right now calculating the DimSmall preset for more than 30 min. Clicking cancel mostly causes StarTools to crash.
I am enjoying the 1.7 so far, since the Wipe module works great and the denoise calculations are much faster. But the Super structure module does not work for me like the Life module did before. The PC runs on Win10 (64 bit), Intel(R) core i5, 8 GB RAM, Intel (R) HD Graphics family.
Anything I can do about this?
Regards
Stefan

Thank you for reporting this. This is not expected behavior! Is your MacBook Pro using an RX5600M?
I have seen this before and it is caused by the GPU driver silently crashing. It should finish with 60 seconds on iGPUs.
Does this help?
Does this still happen with very small datasets (< 1024x1024) as well?
What specific computing resources have you got at your disposal (what does it say in the About dialog?)

Thanks for your fast reply, Ivo! It did not happen with a smaller dataset (~500x500). I followed the instructions from the FAQ and tried to allow a longer time period before TDR kicks in by setting 120 seconds with tdrdelay. That unfortunately didn't work and I repeatedly got a notification that access to the GPU hardware was blocked for StarTools. I then tried to deactivate TDR by tdrlevel (value 0). This was partly successful and I could have a look at the results of the different presets for the first time (dimsmall seems great! ). The notification with the denied access popped up nonetheless. I suppose that only CPU instead of CPU+GPU is used for calculations in that case!? After some playing with the different settings in the AiryDisc presets the infinite calculating started again and StarTools crashed.admin wrote: ↑Tue Nov 03, 2020 1:58 am I have seen this before and it is caused by the GPU driver silently crashing. I'd like to answer your question about the specific computing resources, but I admittedly don't know where to look. Which about dialog in which app/directory? Sorry, I'm not really an IT person...
Best regards
Stefan

Thank you. That should not be failing.
Thanks Stefan. It's the information displayed when you click 'About' in the home screen;

Can you confirm for me the Airy preset looks OK (e.g. just "fuzzy") when you try a smaller image? (say 1024x1024 or 512x512)

I just uploaded 1.7.439 which has yet more provisions and optimizations for GPU timeouts and uses less memory again.
Do let me know if this version helps!

Hi Ivo,
I shrunk the original down by 25% in StarTools (version 1.7.440) and image is now 832x609. Airy preset looks fine here. Here's the renditions for dimsmall, airy and isolate using default settings and there are no longer any streaking in the images.
dimsmall: airy: and isolate: cytan
