1.7.424 alpha with new Wipe module
1.7.424 alpha with new Wipe module
Hi all,
The latest alpha now implements a completely re-written Wipe module. It's been a long slog, but it's finally here.
The revamped Wipe module continues StarTools' tradition to solve complex problems with algorithms and data-derived statistics, rather than subjective manual sample setting or selective processing.
Wipe is now able to detect and correct more (and more complex) calibration problems. In addition to an improved gradient removal routine, it is now able to detect and model vignetting issues (including over-correction), and - most excitingly - bias/darks issue. As a result it completely replaces the Band module which is now obsolete and has been removed.
Internally, the module's engine now models three stages of calibration as carried out by, for example, a stacker; synthetic bias/darks modelling and correction (subtraction) -> synthetic flats modelling and correction (division) -> gradient modelling and correction (subtraction). Any issues specified and/or detected are modelled during the correct stage and feeds into the next.
As a result, wipe now easily deals with dataset issues like these;
...or these (only preset used, no further tweaking);
...and more. Crucially this is done all without manual sample setting or reconstituting ("healing") pixels; e.g. this is data recovery and correction, not synthesis, interpolation or extrapolation.
Of course, the module's engine is GPU-accelerated where possible/practical. The in-app documentation/help is up-to-date, the online documentation is still on the "to do" list. The short in-app help is probably worth reading before use.
Aside from the revamped Wipe module, there are some other fixes, enhancements and improvements in this new alpha as well (see CHANGELOG).
I hope you will like and enjoy the improvements.
Clear skies!

For those of us who have struggled with DynamicBackgroundExtraction for many years, this seems very promising.

Thanks Ivo,
keen on getting my hands on the new Wipe. I always had issues with flats overcorrecting slightly, however time I spent on taking reliable flats. ST had so many improvements over the last year, I think I´ll need the upcoming bad wheather period for redeveloping all good stacks of the last years and see what more may be squeezed out of those datasets .
cheers

Then i have to download it immedately as my M31 looks exactly like the picture on the right....
I did not figure it out...that is why i used the develop stretch , to at least give me something...

Hi Ivo, would you mind putting the zip file on a secure link please?
