crash: selecting stars SVDecon
Re: crash: selecting stars SVDecon
Hi,
I've tried for a while, but have been unable to replicate this on substantially similar hardware and distro.
That said, I'm inclined to think the issue is likely the very low amount of virtual memory at your disposal; 8GB is not a whole lot - a better amount would be 2x to 3x the physical memory (16GB or 24GB in your case) at a minimum.
Have you tried installing swapspace (which essentially allocates as much as your system needs)?

Re: crash: selecting stars SVDecon
Thanks Ivo.
I've set 24Gb swap (using dd and swapon) and have been unable to reproduce.
Looking good.

Re: crash: selecting stars SVDecon
For whatever its worth, I've had great success using SVDecon with GPU-enabled ST and 32GB of system memory...except...on a couple of occasions, SVDecon crashed when I selected a star that straddles the outer edge of the window border; don't do it anymore and no issues.

Great to hear!
It's looking like the next Release Candidate might be final release version of 1.8.
This should definitely not happen any more on the latest RC. If you still see this, do let me know.firebrand18 wrote: ↑Mon Dec 13, 2021 8:23 pm For whatever its worth, I've had great success using SVDecon with GPU-enabled ST and 32GB of system memory...except...on a couple of occasions, SVDecon crashed when I selected a star that straddles the outer edge of the window border; don't do it anymore and no issues.

Re: crash: selecting stars SVDecon
I'll let you know but have not seen it happen since running latest rev; things look stable and solid.

Hi Ivo,
I'm not sure, if it makes sense to reuse this thread - if not, please let me know.
StarTools 1.8.527MR2
Here is the Application Error from the Windows Event Log. (Sorry, only German. But I guess, the dialog looks the same in every language.)
Best regards, Dietmar.

I encountered occasional crashes while selecting stars as well. It might be that this happens when moving the mouse pointer slightly while selecting a star.

Best regards, Dietmar.
Per the earlier posts/solution in this thread, can you confirm your system's available virtual memory is configure to be 2x to 3x your physical memory?
See also this item in the FAQ. Does this help?

Hi Ivo,
I will post here again if it happens again contrary to expectations.
Anyway, this happened occasionally and is no big deal since it is easy to replay the crashed session with Guy's STReplay tool.
Thank you, Dietmar.
Oh, OK. I thought it would be a Linux specific issue. Now I have configured the virtual memory settings as described in the FAQ and on the linked web page.
