Mono image handling..

Post by ChrisLX200 »

It seems that StarTools processes and saves everything as a colour (RGB) image? Even if I load a 16-bit mono FITs or TIFF file it still ends up saving it as a colour image (at 3x the size). Is there some reason for this behaviour or am I missing something?

Hi Chris,

The reason for this is that StarTools assumes "data" as input (which can indeed be mono), but a "finished image" (in sRGB color space) as output.
Merely opening a "mono" data source is not enough of an indication/guarantee that no color data will be introduced during processing. For example, the Color module can be used to generate a false color image, while the Layer module allows for all sorts of color combining/extraction/modification.

Of course, I could create a detection algorithm during saving to figure out if the data is still mono by cross-checking all three channels...
