I have used this technique to create a synthetic luminance. Why not use 100% of the Ha vice a percentage of the image, would you not get a better result?

You end up loosing traces of blue reflection nebula and areas where ha isn't very intense from the image. Synthetic Luminance gives you a balance of both.
