M51 Hubble data

Hi Ivo

With the weather the way it is in the UK at the moment I thought I would have a go at another hubble data set. I chose M51 and looked for the download files which are 400mb each.
I assumed that the numbers for each were the Nm wave length and I have started with 683 as red.

I managed to get startools to load it to the red channel and immediately did a 25% bin followed by a save. See dropbox for file.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/8v683mrnue4pf6b/M51b.tiff

I then cropped, rotated, auto developed and wiped with the result below. It is made of 24 frames stitched together but I cannot get rid of the solid lines of differing levels where the frames meet. Any clue as to how I might achieve this.

Regards
Steve

Hi Steve,

I'm afraid there is not a whole lot we can do about the seams. If the frames would exist individually, some field flattening could be accomplished by using the Wipe or Contrast modules, after which stitching should look better...

Hi Ivo

All I could do was not to use auto develop but bring up develop manually until I could see the panes beginning to appear and then back off a bit.

I also kept trying to get the colour where I wanted it, using RGB, but was not liking the results. I finally just used red and blue which came out a lot better. Green just mucked the whole thing.

Quite happy with the result. :)

Very impressive!
I wouldn't mind seeing your log on this personally.

Cheers, Tom

That's amazing. I bet that's a very unique view no one else has ever seen before. If only the 'hidden treasures' contest was still on.

Thanks Tom.

The first thing is to load and process the individual files. R G and B. Having found green is a problem you might use it as an L channel. These files are 400mb each and the first thing I had to do was bin at 25%. This reduces the picture size to 1/4 of original. Save each one as you complete them as a tiff.

By the way Ivo this is confusing. I thought at first 71% was the way to go to reduce by 71% but it does not mean that. 71 means the picture will reduce to 71% of original size not reduce by 71% (odd figure 71 ?) When using 50% it makes no odds of course.

OK that was done on a powerful machine as it takes a long time to do each file. Some operations take 30 mins after you click on say the keep button as it is re-scaling the whole 8000 x 12000 odd pixel picture down to a quarter size. Patience is required.

I had several goes at each one but the following below may be of help.

The B and G data are quite clean but the red is very noisy. See top of this posting.
I would try using the G as L and see how that goes.

Thanks Ivo, that is quite a compliment coming from you. I only did the easy bit, NASA did the hard part.

Steve,

Thanks so much for detailing what you did! I'm sure I will return to this log in the future in my learning journey. I doubt my computer could handle such large files, but I really appreciate what you have done here. An image where individual stars in a far off galaxy can be resolved is also impressive, and the fact that one can access Hubble files like these is fantastic!
Hope your skies clear soon.

Tom
