Orion Constellation with Barnard's Loop

Post by maxchess »

Image

Taken while on holiday in La Gomera, Canary Islands. Dark skies but overlit hotel
Standard Stsartools workflow brought out all the detail I needed, particularly HAlpha for Barnards Loop.

I like that, did you also take some frames without the filter and do you know what bortle level the skies were where you were.
I have been considering a tri/duo band filter but was not sure if it would be usable with the DSLR as I have not modded it, but I see you used a OSC to produce that.
Did you stop the lens down at all?
You have used gear I am tempted with to great effect.
Betelgeuse is looking dimmer than Rigel there.

I did try my unmoded canon 2000d without filters and the level of detail was much less, especially the Ha which hardly showed up at all. I also tried the DSLR with an Astronomix CLS clip in filter, which was even worse with distorted colour balance that I could not fix in processing. My OSC is cooled and runs well in the field off a small lithium battery.
However I am considering getting a modded DSLR for convenience.
The 50mm lens was stopped right down to f5. I found that wide open stars were bloated.
