Hi Startools friends!
this is my last achievement: more than 10 hours in Ha and RGB.
Frames taken in November and December, but it took me a while for post processing.
- I was waiting for new hardware (and it rocks!)
- I had a long discussion with some of you in the past weeks (see http://forum.startools.org/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=1245, thank you Guy and Rkonrad!)
I'm not completely satisfied, because I wish I had a more "red" and less "pink" color in the image but the problem is much less relevant than in my previous photos
still, doubts remain concerning the synthetic luminance and I'd be grateful if someone will answer
1. why weights are on the total integration time and not on a single frame? we are averaging the frames, not summing, so the number of acquired photons is related to 1 frame, the RMS, instead, is related to the integration time
2. I did "as if" LRGB frames where shoot from a mono camera but this is not true: my DSLR has TWO green sensors, should this influence the mixing (please note how this question is influenced by the first!)?
3. How to take into account the fact that HA and RGB frames used different ISO?
clear skies

Re: Flaming star and Tadpole Ha and HaRGB
Hi Michele,
Sorry I can't answer your questions though I think best on my feet. If you would like to forward your linear files I could try to help you - especially regarding the pink/orange colour of the image. The HA is really wonderful by the way - nice job!

Re: Flaming star and Tadpole Ha and HaRGB
Hi Richard,
the "pink" problem, I think, can be solved in "post production" after having finished with Startools (with, e.g. Gimp/Photoshop/Apple's preview), I already made a few attempts but I'm waiting for "my buddy" approval.
Anyway, if you want linear data to play with ... no problem of course!
1. HA https://www.dropbox.com/s/u95k154ax0k9o ... A.fts?dl=0
2. RGB https://www.dropbox.com/s/akehqaw54sk8l ... e.fts?dl=0
here is an high level summary of my procedure
1. made syntethic luminance
2. processed luminance and RGB separately with RGB heavily denoised
3. LRGB module increasing red to "limit" the pink effect
4. turned on tracking for: develop, Color, life
5. turned off tracking and denoise
have fun!

Re: Flaming star and Tadpole Ha and HaRGB
Well...this took a bit of time and I'm still not satisfied with the red but I may be satisfied with the notion that what I'm looking for may be in my imagination .
I used the HA alone as luminance since I thought the l of the lrgb contributed very little except to dilute the detail of the HA. I separated the channels with Rowland's programme (thanks) then blended the R and Ha to 67 and 33 % to make a final "R" . I then loaded all the linear (unprocessed) as separate channels and processed normally. At the end I removed the stars to shrink and reduce gamma slightly. With the starless image, I adjusted colour a bit with detail aware (mainly decreased the blue - plus the green slightly). My log file is all over the place but I can post it if you want. Great data!!
Second version I used the normal red without ha, stretched it more from the start which would reflect more red in the background.

Re: Flaming star and Tadpole Ha and HaRGB
Veeeery god job Richard!
I like the colors of the first, the second dumped non red colors (see the central blue stars) but the signal is magnificent!
Also, I appreciated you saved star profiles, mine are so bad (see tadpole on my original). You have inspired me to try another attempt!
post the logs please!
thank you very much
Michele

Re: Flaming star and Tadpole Ha and HaRGB
I think I found a better way to do this. The method - multiply under layers, already discussed on this forum has never been successful for me but as long as you keep the stretch low, the reds are really nice. Here I processed the lrgb and ha separately and the trick is not to stretch the lrgb too much - then the reds are great. I processed these very minimally amd quiclklyi so no sharpening, contrast etc though I removed the stars and put them back in both instances. I also binned it 50 percent which makes the stars a bit ugly....
I didn't have to alter any colours an used "scientific" colour.
The lrgb one is https://www.flickr.com/gp/rkonrad/K32T8Y
After processing the ha (sorry didn't save it) I used multiply with layers to combine ha and lrgb to get: https://www.flickr.com/gp/rkonrad/Eg1bjq
Here is the log. Good luck following it!
