NGC 300—The Prototypical Spiral Galaxy

Here is a spiral galaxy that’s so ordinary that it is actually quite interesting. NGC 300 has all the attributes of a “normal” spiral, including a compact nucleus and a predictable number of stars, star clusters and nebulae. Because it’s so straight forward, NGC 300 has been the subject of intense scientific study.

This is an RGB image processed with a synthetic luminance.
