Barnard’s Galaxy—NGC 6822

This is a barred irregular galaxy, part of the Local Group. It’s one of the closest galaxies to the Milky Way and is similar to the Small Magellanic Cloud.

Barnard’s Galaxy was very important in the history of astronomy. Edwin Hubble Hubble discovered 11 Cepheid variables in NGC 6822, which allowed him to measure the distance to the galaxy. He then wrote a paper in 1925 that resolved the “Great Debate” over the scale of the universe and the nature of spiral galaxies.

This image was captured with the RGB channels. I did not separately image Ha, because StarTools does an excellent job of presenting HII regions without a separate Ha channel.
