M51 - The Whirlpool Galaxy

Post by decay »

Hi all,

this one was not an easy one - once again, this is at least my third try on this object:

After stacking, I noticed a strange and (for my setup) unusual kind of (correlated?) noise, which messed up the processing and the image background appearance. Stacking with Siril instead of ASTAP helped at least a bit (I remember Stefan had a similar problem some time ago?).

I still encounter problems (now and then) with tilt or whatever and probably I tightened the MPCC too much, which caused polygon shaped stars and an additional spike. :( I hope I haven't damaged it.

Quite some detail, though, so I binned down to 70% instead of 50%, which is my usual approach. I tried the Repair Module on the malformed stars and the result was astounding: (much too) perfect well formed stars. But I decided not to cheat and so here is with "warts and all", like Martin put it lately.

BTW, interesting retrospect: Here is my first try on this object about 5 years ago, right from the beginning of my journey into AP. Same scope & camera:

This was StarTools version 1.5 (!), which I was evaluating at that time. And I made the right decision. ST evolved much since then :)

Best regards, Dietmar.
