I do have data on M42 that I could potentially try this with. Thanks for clarifying Martin.

Glad to help
In regard to M42 , a more commonly used “orthodox approach” to tame the core and expose the Trap stars is to use the Layer Module
You capture your normal light subs on M42, then capture say 20 x 10 sec subs ,plus your calibration frames
Align and stack both sets separately in DSS but use a common reference frame to ensure both sets of frames are perfectly aligned.
Then process in Startools as normal but use the Layer Module to complete your image
I’ve never used Layer but folk have had good results
