M31 Just Not Right

Hi All,

I have been struggling with this data for quite some time. It was taken from my driveway in a red/white zone. This is my latest effort:

This is the data if anyone wants to give it a try and share how they got their result:

I don't know if I'm missing something with my captures; or I have too much light pollution; or I'm just not processing it correctly.

Here is my workflow:

I had to keep cropping to try to remove stacking artefacts and dont think I got it all, but here is my result.

Thanks Cheman. I was hoping you would jump on this one also. So, it was the stacking artifacts that kept me from getting rid of the noise(??) around the perimeter of M31? I couldn't tell what was noise and what was nebulosity.

So then, despite capturing almost 2 hours of data, I still need more, lots more, to fill in all of the nebulosity and detail of M31? Your image looks great, but I was hoping I had more of both.

How would you recommend I improve the image?

Thanks,

Darryl

Hi Darryl
I'm not entirely sure if it was the stacking artifacts or not. The only way I could smooth it out was to use life-isolate with a mask around the galaxy. I am by no means a Startools expert, and am more familiar with processing my own data and its quirks. did you take images on different nights as your stacked image seemed to have many different framings leading to the stacked image needing to be cropped a lot. I think you have more details that could come out in the processing, but I was limited in time and didn't push it. Its also possible there is something going on with your flats, I'm not really sure. Maybe Ivo can have a look, or one of the others that chime in here. As for 2 hours of data, well, more always seems to be better ;) We cant really compare apples to apples here because of different equipment and such, but my image of this was 8 hours of data using 10 minute subs. http://astrob.in/123053/E/

Now that's the M31 I'm after! Data, among other things like skills, equipment, dark clear skies, and time!

Yeah, between clouds, equipment failures, mistakes coupled with a steep learning curve, it took many different sessions to put the data together which is the reason for so many different sets of frames. By the time I started sorting things out M31 was too far past the trees to get good subs...no excuses.

Nice image!
