Hi Alex,
I think I often find that although SVDecon does an amazing job (better than any other software that I've tried), it just accentuates the difference between the now even more point-like star in the centre, and the big coloured hazy blur around it.
Your recent he pic below seems tobe a bit better - as Dietmar pointed out before, it seems to reflect "data quality". Still, there seem to be room for improvement:
focus or dew issues which might cause the "halos". Especially using a PEC cooled cam might be prone if not kept dry during storage. Have You tried reducing the PEC cooling a bit?
check Your optical train for alignment issues or optical correction flaws.

Once You'll get some hours of data and create a good quality stack with sharp focussed stars, SVDecon should improve these to point sources. What it probably can't do is creating tack-sharp stars out of defocussed or overexposed blobs - these will probably always show the strange "inverse donut" star
As said, combining the ST tools will help: E.g. Super Structure Dim Small, when pushing back the star field, will also reduce their brightness. As it selectively works on large structures, not stars, these dark rings rings created by SVDecon should also be mitigated. The trick is to find a balance between a decent SVDecon results until the rings appear just slightly and then pushing back stars to make the rings less obvious. Also, very few iterations of Shrink might help
