Ivo,
This thread is a real keeper. I love it when you go into depth to explain a concept and to show how ST does just about anything that any other software will do.

Re: Latest Star Tools Images
Looking good Gary! I remember you said you wanted to get M45 this season and you did! Did you use an LP filter at all for these images? I don't use filters. Wipe usually takes care of all my gradient problems since I wised up and starting using flats. For some reason, this one was really...

Re: Process Help for M81, M82
Wow nice result! Thanks for processing the data. I knew there was more detail in M81. I see you Binned, as recommended in the tutorials. You also used Decon which I have yet to get figured out. Looks like I need to watch more tutorials. I'll process using your settings so I can see the changes happ...

Re: Process Help for M81, M82
Mike, I tried your data in Star Tools and PixInsight. I usually do a lot better in Star Tools, but in this case, PI did a better job of taming the noise. There's definitely some detail in the image. But I think with just four subs, it's tough to dig it out. Here's the Star Tools version with the log...

Latest Star Tools Images
Winter brings long stretches between clear nights here in the Seattle area. I've been waiting patiently to try out my new AT65EDQ and was rewarded in late January with a clear weekend. I got the M82 supernova in this image with my C8. M82_NebPreProc_STProc2_Reduced.jpg And again in a wider shot with...

IC 1795 in Star Tools and PixInsight
Caught a rare near perfect night last night and got about three hours of data for IC 1795 (part of the Heart Nebula, IC 1805). I processed my data in Star Tools and PixInsight. For whatever reason I usually clearly do better in one program or the other, but in this case I am happy with both versions...

Re: Newbie just learning Startools...
Ddanley, Our setups are identical except I use a baader modded 450D. The "?" buttons provide popup help for each function. If you're using a beta version the help may not be available or may not be up to date. But most buttons should work. I use Nebulosity for my calibration and stacking. To produce...

M33 Processed.jpg First I have to say you are making your life waaaaaaaaaaaay harder than it has to be by not using flats. I started APing this last summer and thought flats would be too much hassle. I struggled with resulting images with really severe vignetting like your M33. I then took a set of...

Re: Having issues with processing
It's not white noise. It's nebulosity. The image below is the result of a single Auto-Dev, 50% bin, default wipe, default Life-Isolate with full mask, default color and default Denoise. I haven't used DSS for awhile because I think it's junk. But if you could post the settings you used maybe somebod...

Re: Problems Extracting Real Data
I have only a few months experience with AP but I have found that DSS is garbage. I use Nebulosity exclusively and I am very happy with it. I would really recommend that you download a trial and give it a go. The trial version of Nebulosity overlays a big black "X" on images, but it doesn't affect y...
