Re: StarTools vs Siril - A challenge
Hixx Sorry for the delay in replying, I've been away from home. I've found the same as you, I need to back off the SVDecon a bit otherwise it gets a bit too agressive. As I mentioned earlier in this thread, I've used spreadsheets to estimate the correct sub-exposure and gain for my ASI183MM Pro. 30 ...

Re: StarTools vs Siril - A challenge
There is no intelligence telling OptiDev to "recognize" a star as point source, this is where SVDecon would come into play. I think I often find that although SVDecon does an amazing job (better than any other software that I've tried), it just accentuates the difference between the now even more p...

OK, quick comparison I have two images here https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/tiqji1blovtljg1k9l6w3/OptiDev.tiff?rlkey=498j3vahwsjnszq4nqpipxxo4&dl=0 and here https://www.dropbox.com/scl/fi/1xohcrbzi8ya8oblgpeop/FilmDev.tiff?rlkey=2nggi4mnj0q9jouihjo0xgtuj&dl=0 They have just been stretched and coloure...

Re: StarTools vs Siril - A challenge
Hi Alex, The issue has to be to do with the way that OptiDev stretches the brightness around those mid-to-bright stars. That may be true. Have you tried playing with the brightness tranche bit-depth, as Ivo suggested? Sometimes it shows a noticeable impact, at least for the highlights. Another idea...

Re: StarTools vs Siril - A challenge
Ron Thanks for trying that. I had been meaning to do the same, but hadn't had a chance to find any suitable data to test with. As you say, StarTools stars have a distinctive look that you don't see elsewhere. I know we are used to seeing brighter stars as larger and that is what we now view as what ...

Re: StarTools vs Siril - A challenge
Ivo, Ron Yes, I'm using an ASI183MM-Pro mono camera. I was under the impression that unity gain is pretty irrelevant. See the 3:50 mark in this video from Robin Glover, the Sharpcap author. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ub1HjvlCJ5Y When I first got the camera I used a spreadsheet developed by the ...

Re: StarTools vs Siril - A challenge
Thanks Ivo, that's a really enlightening look at what Starnet gets up to. the camera window or filter coatings could be of influence. Have you imaged without filters? That is something that I'm wondering. I've not tried imaging without filters, I'll have to give it a go if I ever get a clear night t...

Re: StarTools vs Siril - A challenge
Alex, here is the log StarTools_log.zip Thanks, I'll take a look through and see if I can use any of your techniques. I would consider the "some" qualifier to be somewhat optimistic... There is very little original detail left Would you mind showing me what you mean? That Siril image is literally t...

Re: StarTools vs Siril - A challenge
Ivo Thanks for the reply. I'm just not seeing how, given the rather noisy and limited LRGB dataset provided, one can arrive at any of the Siril images without some heavy (and I mean heavy!) detail synthesis I can't speak for the first Siril image, I didn't create it, but there's obviously all sorts ...

Re: StarTools vs Siril - A challenge
Ron Oh that looks good. I'll have to give it a try using your processing steps. Would you mind posting your log of this session? I didn't think Wipe was having much of a problem with this image, but I binned to 50% as a matter of course anyway, so maybe I never saw an issue. Undoing the decon on the...
